Maria Isabel Triana, M.D.
Dr. Triana is a board-certified ophthalmologist—a medical doctor who specializes in diseases and surgery of the eye. As one of the best ophthalmologists in San Antonio, she focuses on providing comprehensive ophthalmology services. However, she does a particular interest in glaucoma and dry eye.
Originally hailing from Bogota, Colombia, Dr. Triana relocated to the U.S. in 2002. She completed her medical school and residency training in Ophthalmology at Javeriana University. Javeriana is one of South America’s oldest and most renowned private universities, founded in 1623. Following her residency, she established her own private practice. In addition, she volunteered in remote areas of the Amazon Rainforest, where access to medical care was extremely limited.
After moving to the U.S., Dr. Triana took on the role of Research Coordinator for a project at the Texas Diabetes Institute of the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio. This project focused on investigating the development of diabetic retinopathy in children.
Subsequently, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where she completed a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Glaucoma Genetics at the prestigious Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, part of Harvard Medical School, under the guidance of Janie Wiggs, M.D., Ph.D. During her time there, she made a groundbreaking discovery by identifying a novel genetic defect associated with thin corneas in an African-American population, an independent risk factor for glaucoma.
Driven by her desire to continue her career in the U.S., Dr. Triana returned to San Antonio. There, she repeated the Internship and Residency (4 years in total) she had already completed in Bogota, in order to obtain her U.S. medical license. She successfully completed a rigorous Internship in Internal Medicine, followed by a 3-year Residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio. Afterwards, Dr. Triana joined the San Antonio Eye & Face Institute in 2011. Since then, she has been recognized as one of the best ophthalmologists in San Antonio.
Thanks to her expertise and dedication, Dr. Triana has earned numerous accolades. She was spotlighted in the renowned publication The Leading Physicians of the World. In addition to her clinical work, she is fluent in both English and Spanish, enabling her to connect with a diverse range of patients and communities.
Dr. Triana is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Texas Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society, and the San Antonio Society of Ophthalmologists. In recognition of her contributions, she was selected as a “Doctor of Excellence” in 2013 by the Leaders in Healthcare Network. She was also featured in the Doctors of Excellence edition of Physicians Review.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Triana enjoys spending quality time with her family. She loves dancing salsa and merengue with her husband, Dr. Jones, and is an avid tennis player who participates in USTA league matches. Her passion for patient care, combined with her exceptional skills, solidifies her position as one of the best ophthalmologists San Antonio has to offer.
